I've committed to making sure that the kids actually "hit" some milestones particularly from the List of Attainments of Charlotte Mason.
We've done most of it but haven't been as consistent as we should when it comes to nature journaling, so here we are starting off with yellow bells from our walk.
Paco, too, will have to "catch up" on memorizing and narrating certain stories and poems.
They're not complicated feats, but add so much beauty in our homeschool anyway in the process.
In case you haven't heard of Charlotte Mason's Formidable List of Attainments, it's a set of educational goals and ideals that she believed children should strive for. These attainments are an integral part of the Charlotte Mason homeschooling philosophy:
A Formidable List of Attainments for a Child of Six
a reprint of a curriculum outline from a CM school in the 1890’sTo recite, beautifully, 6 easy poems and hymns; ✅ ✘
To recite, perfectly and beautifully, a parable and a psalm; ✅ ✘
To add and subtract numbers up to 10, with dominoes or counters; ✅ ✅
To read–what and how much, will depend on what we are told of the child; ✅ ✘
To copy in print-hand from a book; ✅ ✅
To know the points of the compass with relation to their own home, where the sun rises and sets, and the way the wind blows; ✅ ✘
To describe the boundaries of their own home; ✅ ✅
To describe any lake, river, pond, island etc. within easy reach; ✅ ✘
To tell quite accurately (however shortly) 3 stories from Bible history, 3 from early English, and 3 from early Roman history (which we're personalizing to 3 Filipino stories, and 3 from Philippine history!); ✅ ✘
To be able to describe 3 walks and 3 views; ✅ ✅
To mount in a scrap book a dozen common wildflowers, with leaves (one every week); to name these, describe them in their own words, and say where they found them.✘✘
To do the same with leaves and flowers of 6 forest trees; ✘✘
To know 6 birds by song, colour and shape; ✘✘
To send in certain Kindergarten or other handiwork, as directed; ✅ ✘
To tell three stories about their own “pets”–rabbit, dog or cat. ✅ ✅
To name 20 common objects in French (in our case, 20 common objects in Filipino), and say a dozen little sentences; ✅ ✘
To sing one hymn, one French song (which we changed to Filipino song), and one English song; ✅ ✘
To keep a caterpillar and tell the life-story of a butterfly from his own observations. ✅ ✅
I've marked Roux's accomplishments first (since she's already 8yo) and Paco's next. There are some items here we've set out to accomplish this schoolyear and hope we can stick to it! Wish us luck!
July was Health Month, so our Family Cluster had a Field Trip around the Gardenia Bread Plant in Binan, Laguna last July 21, 2023. They learned how their favorite breads are made and watched an audio-visual presentation of how the breads are transported across the country. They also had lessons on how to eat healthy foods, the 3 food groups: go. grow and glow foods as well as proper hand washing.
It was a free and a delightful experience!
