Roux
Fourth Grade
2023
We're so thrilled that Roux has been quite a voracious reader! She reads at least 2 books a day for 15 minutes each time. This schoolyear, Roux is going through some of the books in 2 programs, namely Blossom & Root Year 4's Heores and Myths where she will be exploring the Hero's Journey and Torchlight Curriculum 3's Ideas & Innovations Socratic-themed selections where she will be invited to delve into themes that embody resilience, lessons from history's pitfalls, the essence of philosophy, nurturing creativity, and championing justice.
We love using these 2 Language Arts curriculums because B&R is so simple that she gets to narrate, do vocabulary, dissect sentences and is gently exposed to dictation. Torchlight, on the other hand, has a beautiful selection that comes with Literary Primers that provide insights into the significance of the books, guides us through their vocabulary, highlight potential nuances to be aware of while reading, and present openings for thought-provoking discussions.
She's finished reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and is on to Greek Mythology and Percy Jackson which lines up perfectly with our Ancient World History lessons. As of writing, she's on the last chapter of The Secrets of Shakespeare.
Lined-up for her are journeys alongside a robot, sharing his evolution and quest for belonging, as described by Torchlight. She will get to uncover the worth of visionaries reimagining age-old tales and understand that progress in the past often came at a cost. So far, through these books, our conversations at the breakfast table have been quite profound without scripted constraints, flowing naturally into the kind of conversations we love having... genuine and unfiltered.
We're hoping to pique at the minds of Emily Dickinson and Shakespeare through their works this year an I pray that Roux will love what she discovers about herself through these titles.

Celebrating Roux receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharist for the first time this week. 5 weeks of online catechisms in preparation for this was tiring and hectic alongside her ballet recital. And receiving this gift at a most challenging season strengthens our resolve to educate our children in the best way and most humanly possible manner that we can, with courage, doing it afraid. Making this happen, with an even deeper connection to the task for our entire family, not just for Roux, felt like a reward for trusting our instincts that it will be ok to crash the ceiling I personally put over my head, limiting myself to the belief that my imperfections as a parent does not qualify me to minister my children through home education. I was very afraid and needed assurances that enrolling our daughter in a traditional Catholic school could have safely accomplished for us. Thank you Jesus for guiding us into a path accompanied by a thriving community of fellow homeschoolers, families in faith, volunteer parishioners and our families.
