Pao and I both grew up in modest financial situations, where we learned the value of making the most of what we had.
Personally, my relationship with money has been challenging as I've always held the belief that it is the root of all evil. I often harbored resentment towards the fact that I had to work tirelessly to earn it, despite growing up to be a diligent and hardworking individual who fortunately found meaningful work.
I wanted to change this narrative for my children, fueled by optimism and the lessons we've learned along the way. With the unique opportunity of homeschooling, we now have the chance to openly discuss and nurture a positive attitude towards money—a topic we could only hint at with our older children due to our limited knowledge at the time. When Roux started asking questions about the reasons behind our work and how we earn money to purchase things, we decided that she was ready to take on a more practical approach to Math and use the "Simply Charlotte Mason Your Business Math" curriculum. It's an amazing resource that makes learning about business and math fun and practical for kids.
With this curriculum, we hope for Roux to learn important skills like budgeting, saving, and making smart financial choices. It uses real-life examples and hands-on activities to help her understand how money works in our daily lives. We're incredibly thrilled because, as artists and Fine Arts graduates, Paolo and I found ourselves in entrepreneurial endeavors that forced us to stumble our way through understanding Math concepts and using sheets for profit margins, payroll, inventory management, and financial projections late in our adult life! Math was never our cup of tea, and we did everything to dodge it, only to realize how crucial it is for our own businesses.
What's great about this curriculum is that it encourages Roux to think creatively, solve problems, and explore different ways to earn money. Our hope is that this empowers her to become confident in managing her finances and making good decisions for her future.
We're optimistic that this will empower Roux with valuable life skills and a positive mindset towards money. We're excited to support her as she embarks on a hands-on journey exploring the world of business and math through her own bookstore, "Amelia's World of Books." Starting with a branding and logo design lesson using Canva, she will then dive into essential skills like budgeting, profit calculations, and inventory management, preparing her for a future full of financial savvy and an entrepreneurial mindset. While taking a break from ballet, we signed up Roux with TULA Wealth Champions for 5 weeks, twice a week. This program has truly empowered her and instilled a belief in her own capacity to become an independent decision-maker.
Through a thrilling simulation of personal finance management, Roux learned invaluable skills such as earning, saving, spending, investing, and even donating. The interactive nature of the classes made them lively and engaging. The sessions are conducted in small groups on Zoom, and they're 100% live by highly-trained tutors at TULA. I love how the coaches tailored the conversations specifically to each child's ability, skill level, and learning needs.
The program has received international recognition and awards from prestigious organizations such as M.I.T. Solve, Globe Futuremakers, the Center for Education Innovations, the Atlassian Foundation, Ashoka, and Kickstart and is a is truly an innovative online learning program that has made a positive impact on Roux's life.
Last year, after watching School of Rock to Paolo's probing, the kids wanted to shift our Music Lessons to Rock n' Roll. So I looked into Torchlight's Rock n Roll Unit Study that was part of their Level 5 bundle. Level 5 already included The Art of Navigating Finances, a 15 week Introduction to Finance & Responsible Consumerism and so in line with Roux's interest in finances, we'll try to implement some of the lessons from here as well. This mind-boggling finance lab is designed to take Roux into the world of money and empower her to make sound financial decisions. Instead of sitting in a boring classroom listening to lectures; this course is packed with electrifying lessons, captivating readings, and mind-expanding activities to learn theoretical conceptsm newfound knowledge and skills into action, taking Roux's financial game to the next level. We're talking about real-life, hands-on experiences that will transform Roux into a financial wizard! (or so the curriculum description says). As a money-averse adult, I'm personally excited to unveil the secrets behind those sneaky marketing tactics that try to trickus into spending and hopefully enable our family to make savvy and conscious choices in every economic situation! This Math journey is not your ordinary Arithmetic. Our family goal is to achieve financial freedom and a more balanced economic future for our kids and so our homeschool journey reflects that choice. For all we know, our children might unleash their inner financial guru and teach us their parents!
